All debris was disposed off site, leaving no mess for the customer to deal with after our workcrew have completed the job.

Gravel ferricrete hardstand driveway - Parkerville Perth Hills

Gravel ferricrete hardstand driveway - Parkerville Perth Hills

Jan 2017

Ferricrete gravel (also known as simply gravel) is commonly used by us in the Perth hills areas to match the existing landscape and provides a great material for hardstand driveways, carparks, parking areas and garden paths / footpaths.

Hardstand driveways can also be installed using roadbase (which is grey in colour) or limestone (which is a cream / white colour), however gravel is the more popular choice, especially in the Perth hills.

Hardstand driveways are very long lasting and durable, with minimal annual maintenance.

In this case, the ferricrete was then sealed with red asphalt (red oxide bitumen) - see next Blog entry for the completed driveway.

Finished red asphalt driveway - Parkerville Perth hills

Finished red asphalt driveway - Parkerville Perth hills

Jan 2017

This large double driveway and crossovers was first prepared into a gravel hardstand - see our previous Blog entry.

The entire area was then sealed with red asphalt (known by several names including red oxide bitumen, red oxide hotmix, red 1% asphalt, red gravelpave bitumen) to complete the job, making it an ultra low maintenance surface, easily cleaned, not needed any annual maintenance, and built to last for many years.

Kalamunda - Perth hills - black bitumen crossover resurface

Kalamunda - Perth hills - black bitumen crossover resurface

Jan 2017

This crossover was repaired by prefilling all the potholes and damaged areas, then resurfaced with a new layer of black asphalt / granite black hotmix.

The crossover can be driven on immediately, unlike concrete which requires a curing time with no vehicle access.

The home owners chose not to install kerbing on the sides of the crossover, as it is not needed, however can be added later for aesthetic reasons if wanted.

Glen Forrest - Perth hills - red asphalt crossover

Glen Forrest - Perth hills - red asphalt crossover

Jan 2017

Red asphalt / red oxide bitumen / red hotmix are commonly used in the Perth hills areas, including this crossover at a home in Glen Forrest.

The double width crossover plus wings allows the property owners to access their concrete driveway from the road.

The photo was taken immediately after the job was completed so water is visible on the surface. The asphalt also appears almost black, but will lighten to a red colour over time when the red oxide is exposed to sunlight.

Cloverdale - black bitumen driveway resurface

Cloverdale - black bitumen driveway resurface

Jan 2017

This driveway was many years old and uneven, full of potholes, and damaged. The potholes were filled, subsidences were repaired and the entire driveway was resurfaced with new black asphalt / bitumen / hotmix.

The residential property is in Cloverdale, Perth, where asphalt is a common driveway and crossover material, which usually lasts for decades and now that a new layer has been laid, this driveway will last for many more years.

Upper Swan - Swan Valley Perth - shed driveway extension

Upper Swan - Swan Valley Perth - shed driveway extension

Dec 2016

After using the driveway for a short perior (see previous blog entry), the owner decided to extend the driveway out by several metres to allow a wider access path and turning circle / reversing bay.

The extension was constructed in black asphalt / black bitumen to match the main driveway.

Upper Swan - Swan Valley Perth - shed driveway in black asphalt

Upper Swan - Swan Valley Perth - shed driveway in black asphalt

Dec 2016

A large shed needed sealed access so we installed a black asphalt driveway using granite black hotmix.

The area was a sandy, grassed surface and we completed all works from start to finish - fill removal, roadbase, black asphalt to create the driveway and vehicle access.

red asphalt repair patch in driveway - Gooseberry Hill - Perth hills

red asphalt repair patch in driveway - Gooseberry Hill - Perth hills

Dec 2016

The property owners of this driveway in Perth hills suburb Gooseberry Hill needed a small repair done to a slight damaged section. You can clearly see the colour difference in an aged red oxide hotmix (red oxide asphalt, red gravelpave hotmix) material, compared to newly laid red oxide hotmix in the patch.

The patch will lighten over time with exposure to sunlight.

Trench Repairs - Bibra Lake

Trench Repairs - Bibra Lake

Nov 2016

This industrial property in Bibra Lake required an upgrade to their property which included many trenches for water and electrical.

Areas were first saw cut, any contaminated fill removed and roadbase installed and waterbound.

Hotmix was laid @ 40mm thick due to the expected heavy use of the area.

Now that it is all finished off, business can get back to normal for the customer.

disabled access ramp - Harvey hospital (South West WA)

disabled access ramp - Harvey hospital (South West WA)

Nov 2016

Harvey Hospital required urgent asphalt works to seal an access ramp to one of their main entrances. Our workcrew attended site to lay black asphalt / bitumen / hotmix to provide a safe area while construction work is being completed at the hospital.

carpark root damage repair - Bayswater Perth

carpark root damage repair - Bayswater Perth

Oct 2016

Tree roots had caused some damage in a black asphalt carpark in Bayswater (Perth industrial commercial area) which required sawcutting of the asphalt bitumen hotmix, removal of the tree roots, then reinstatement of the bitumen.

Yellow sand had been spread on the newly repaired patch before this photo was taken - sand is used to protect the newly laid surface from unsightly scuff marks and allows the carpark to be used immediately after our workcrew have finished - no drying time.

Culvert pipe and headwalls - crossover - Darlington Perth hills

Culvert pipe and headwalls - crossover - Darlington Perth hills

Oct 2016

We installed this concrete culvert pipe and concrete headwalls on a rural crossover in Darlington in the Perth hills.

The culvert allows stormwater to flow along the verge uninteruppted by the property owner's rural driveway. A gravel / limestone / roadbase hardstand was then installed over the top of the culvert pipe creating a strong basecourse, then asphalt / hotmix / bitumen was laid to seal the crossover.

new red bitumen driveway - Greenmount Perth hills

new red bitumen driveway - Greenmount Perth hills

Oct 2016

The old cracked and damaged concrete driveway and concrete crossover is now a brand new red bitumen (red asphalt) driveway in preparation for the house to be sold.

A roadbase /gravel / limestone basecourse was installed and compacted, to ensure there was a solid base for the bitumen / asphalt / hotmix to be laid on. The driveway and crossover were then sealed with red gravelpave hotmix (red bitumen / red asphalt) which suits the property much more and blends this driveway in with others in the Greenmount Perth hills area.

This house will shortly be presented for sale with all the improvements including the new low-maintenance aesthetically pleasing driveway and crossover.

BEFORE: damaged kerbing - Bentley Perth commercial area

BEFORE: damaged kerbing - Bentley Perth commercial area

Oct 2016

Kerbing was badly damaged along the edge of the entrance to this industrial / commercial property in Bentley. The damaged kerbing was removed and disposed of, and broken edges of hotmix / bitumen / asphalt were repaired and ready for new kerbing to be laid the following day.

Gravel ferricrete hardstand parking area driveway - Greenmount Perth hills

Gravel ferricrete hardstand parking area driveway - Greenmount Perth hills

Oct 2016

Also in Greenmount, in the Perth hills, this house needed some additional parking areas along the front of the house. They chose not to seal the parking area, as they prefer the natural look of gravel / ferricrete surfaces common in the Perth hills area.

After the gravel is spread and levelled, it is compacted and waterbound which is why the surface appears wet in the photo. Over the next few days, it will dry and form a very hard and usable surface. Gravel, roadbase or limestone hardstand surfaces are more economical than hotmix/bitumen/asphalt sealed surfaces, but will require a little bit more maintenance over the years as they can be affected by traffic and water run off.

Greenmount - driveway extension - black bitumen

Greenmount - driveway extension - black bitumen

Oct 2016

This driveway had an existing gravel / ferricrete hardstand surface which although solid was not sealed so would eventually erode and leave dust on vehicles and shoes in contact with it.

We first did some minor re-levelling and compaction. Black hotmix / bitumen / asphalt was chosen to blend in with the existing driveway on the property, in Greenmount (perth hills).

The timber edging was installed by the owner before our arrival on site, and the sealed surface will provide an easy low-maintenance area for many years to come.

Steep driveway resurface - Kalamunda

Steep driveway resurface - Kalamunda

Oct 2016

This badly potholled and damaged driveway in the Kalamunda Perth hills area, was in need of serious repair.

We swept the area clean, prefilled and compacted all holes and low areas before resurfacing with black hotmix / asphalt / bitumen.

The driveway was very steep, but this is not an issue for our experienced workcrew.

Kerbing was not chosen by this property owner, but can be added to the sides of any driveway area for aesthetic reasons if preferred.

The black asphalt is dark when first laid and fades to a dark grey over time.

Driveway extension on curved driveway - Hovea - Perth hills

Driveway extension on curved driveway - Hovea - Perth hills

Oct 2016

The bend in this driveway in Hovea in the Perth Hills, was badly damaged due to traffic running over the edge.

The area was prepared with new gravel/ferricrete/road base, compacted and waterbound, then sealed with red hotmix (also called red 1% asphalt, or red gravelpave bitumen).

This has made the driveway easier to use and will keep drivers on the sealed surface.

Bitumen path to shed - Piesse Brook - Perth hills

Bitumen path to shed - Piesse Brook - Perth hills

Oct 2016

The property owner wanted a low maintenance path from an area of the garden up to a large shed to allow easy access of wheelbarrows and other equipment.

This photo was taken immediately after the job was finished so the red colouring has not yet developed in the red gravelpave hotmix (also called red bitumen or red 1% asphalt), but over time it will lighten as the oxide reacts with sunlight.

The path is smooth, safe, wont be affected by ants tunnelling, and was able to be used as soon as our workcrew were finished. It will last for many years, and as well as making the property easier to work on, provides a nice aesthetic finish to the garden and compliments the existing asphalt driveway on the property.

Gooseberry Hill - red gravelpave bitumen driveway - view from rear

Gooseberry Hill - red gravelpave bitumen driveway - view from rear

Sep 2016

The rear of the new red gravelpave asphalt / red hotmix / red bitumen driveway - with 100mm of roadbase / gravel / limestone beneath it, it will last for many years to come and handle any boat, caravan or other traffic the property owners wish to store on it.

This driveway ties in flush to the brickpaved original driveway at the front of the house, and with the brick wall of the house and fence coming down the side of the house.

At the rear of the property where this photo was taken, it ties in flush to the surrounding lawn. The edge of the asphalt / hotmix does not need any edging unless it will be driven over regularly, however some people like to install kerbing along the edge for aesthetic reasons. This property owner chose not to install kerbing, however if they change their mind and wish to install it at a later date it can be installed in the future with no issue.

Gooseberry Hill - red gravelpave bitumen driveway to rear shed

Gooseberry Hill - red gravelpave bitumen driveway to rear shed

Sep 2016

Continuation of the red gravelpave / hotmix / red bitumen / red asphalt - this photo shows the side driveway from the rear viewpoint, looking towards the front of the house and front driveway. We also installed a double parking area next to the brickpaved driveway.

Yellow sand has not yet been spread on this asphalt driveway, but will be after the photos have been taken, to protect it from unsightly tyre scuff marks during initial use.

This driveway is an easy care, low maintenance option for those who don't wish to spend their weekends weeding the driveway, and is also easily and neatly installed around tricky shapes such as downpipes and fencing.

Gooseberry Hill - red oxide asphalt driveway to shed and rear of property

Gooseberry Hill - red oxide asphalt driveway to shed and rear of property

Sep 2016

A side driveway was installed at the same Gooseberry Hill residence as previous entry, with a 100mm roadbase/gravel/limestone hardstand surface, which was sealed with a 25mm red asphalt / hotmix / bitumen surface - commonly called red gravelpave with 1% oxide.

The asphalt driveway provides access to the property owner's shed and the rear of their block, and allows vehicle access as well as somewhere for them to store their boat or caravan.

We have also installed side driveways such as these for subdivisions where a bitumen driveway is required to access the rear block.

Gooseberry Hill - red oxide bitumen driveway and parking area

Gooseberry Hill - red oxide bitumen driveway and parking area

Sep 2016

This double parking bay was installed at a Gooseberry Hill residence. After removing excess soil, a gravel/roadbase hardstand surface was first laid, and this was then sealed with a red asphalt / hotmix / bitumen surface.

The area provides two additional parking bays next to the brickpaved driveway and blends in with the gravel rocks and native vegetation used in the front yard.

This red oxide bitumen asphalt is dark when first laid but will turn a light shade of red over time.

finished trench for electrical installation - West Perth -

finished trench for electrical installation - West Perth -

Sep 2016

Completed asphalt / bitumen / hotmix trench - after we sawcut and excavated this trench several days ago, a new electrical system was installed and we then returned to the site in West Perth to backfill and seal the trench over, allowing access to the asphalt bitumen carpark and driveways to re-open.

trench excavation for electrical installation - West Perth

trench excavation for electrical installation - West Perth

Sep 2016

This West Perth business needed a trench sawcut and excavated in their asphalt driveway for installation of a new electrical system, then the asphalt / bitumen reinstated.

We attended site to sawcut and excavate the trench on one day - you can see in the photo that we have had to work around existing service pipes (in this case water pipes). Electrical contactors completed their installation the following day, then we were able to reattend site on a second visit to backfill and comapct the trench, install and compact roadbase to form a durable hardstand basecourse, then lay a new layer of black asphalt / hotmix / bitumen to tie in flush with the surrounding bitumen carpark, carbays and driveways.

Minimal disruption time was crucial to this business and we worked with the electrical contractors to ensure as little down time as possible. We pride ourselves on reliable, prompt service.

Asphalt yard repairs - Perth Industrial - southern suburbs

Asphalt yard repairs - Perth Industrial - southern suburbs

Sep 2016

This industrial yard was badly damaged due to extremely heavy traffic such as large trucks and fork lifts.

The areas were sawcut and all damaged material removed from site.

A heavy duty 10mm granite black hotmix was installed and compacted.

The site was left clean, all debris removed and ready for the client to resume business immediately with minimal downtime.

industrial crossover extensions - Oconnor - Perth commercial area

industrial crossover extensions - Oconnor - Perth commercial area

Sep 2016

A large commercial yard required improved access for their heavy duty trucks to enter and exit the property.

We widened several of the property crossovers by removing and disposing of excess fill, installing a thick layer of roadbase, then a 40mm layer of black heavy duty asphalt / bitumen / hotmix to seal the areas.

New heavy duty semi-mountable concrete kerbing was installed along the edges of each crossover.

Yellow sand has been begun to be sprinkled on this completed job to protect it from unsightly tyre scuff marks. The area is able to be driven on immediately and traffic flow was able to be kept open during all works so there was no downtime for the businesses on site.

Crossover and driveway resurface - Glen Forrest - Perth Hills

Crossover and driveway resurface - Glen Forrest - Perth Hills

Sep 2016

This steep driveway, crossover and reversing bay, located in Glen Forrest (in the Perth Hills) was badly potholed and worn.

All loose material was swept and removed from site. Low areas and potholes were pre-filled and compacted before being completely resurfaced with 7mm granite black hotmix @ 25mm thick.

The client chose not to edge his driveway as to blend in with the natural surroundings.

This driveway not only looks great but has made access to the property at the top of the steep driveway much easier.

Industrial parking area - South Guildford - Perth eastern suburbs

Industrial parking area - South Guildford - Perth eastern suburbs

Sep 2016

This carpark extension was constructed with the intended use of a Machinery Display area.

A smaller carpark previously existed in this area. We removed the excess fill from the extensions to create a much bigger and more accessible area. Roadbase/ gravel was installed at 150mm (due to its intended use of heavy vehicles) and sealed with 40mm of granite black hotmix / asphalt / bitumen.

To keep the raised garden beds from spilling onto the bitumen / asphalt / hotmix surface and to border the Display area, a heavy duty barrier concrete kerb was laid around the edges.

The existing carpark edge was sawcut to allow for the new hotmix / asphalt / bitumen to tie in flush.

Red oxide asphalt driveway and parking area - Darlington Perth hills

Red oxide asphalt driveway and parking area - Darlington Perth hills

Sep 2016

After removing the top soil from this existing driveway and parking area in Darlington in the Perth hills, a gravel base was used to prepare the area for the red asphalt / hotmix / bitumen seal.

The driveway blends in flush with the existing concrete driveway, garage and road.

No edging was used on this job which allows the garden beds be brought up flush to the edge of the driveway.

The bitumen surface can also be used for basketball courts either at home, or for professional or school use.

bitumen carpark patch repair - Alfreds Kitchen Guildford - Perth eastern suburbs

bitumen carpark patch repair - Alfreds Kitchen Guildford - Perth eastern suburbs

Sep 2016

Well known burger cafe Alfreds Kitchen in Guildford relies on us to maintain their red bitumen customer carpark which is subject to heavy use due to the popularity of the cafe.

These two patches in the bitumen / asphalt / hotmix were sunken, making it difficult for traffic to drive through the carpark. We sawcut and removed the sunken bitumen / asphalt, installed and compacted roadbase to bring the areas back up to the correct level, then laid 25mm of red oxide bitumen to seal them. The two patches appear darker than the surrounding bitumen carpark as the oxide has not yet had a chance to lighten, but will turn a lighter red over time with exposure to the sunlight.

Our early start times meant the patches were repaired early in the morning, could be driven on immediately, and business could open as usual that same day.

Industrial trench repair in bitumen carpark / yard - Bayswater - Perth industrial east suburbs

Industrial trench repair in bitumen carpark / yard - Bayswater - Perth industrial east suburbs

Sep 2016

A trench had been cut, excavated to install services then backfilled before our arrival on site. We compacted the sub-base and added 150mm of roadbase which was compacted and waterbound forming a strong basecourse which can withstand heavy duty traffic.

The trench was then sealed with asphalt (also called bitumen or hotmix) which ties in flush to the surrounding existing bitumen carpark.

One of the benefits of bitumen / asphalt over concrete is that it can be easily repaired and driven on immediately so work sites do not need to be shut down for long (no waiting for cure times).

Yellow sand has been sprinkled on this completed job to protect it from unsightly tyre scuff marks.

See previous entry for photo showing half way through construction.

This photo shows the completed job where asphalt (also called bitumen or hotmix) has been laid over the new hump.

raise asphalt under gate (halfway through construction) - Bickley - Perth hills

raise asphalt under gate (halfway through construction) - Bickley - Perth hills

Aug 2016

A commercial property in the Perth hills suburb of Bickley had an electric gate installed for security. The driveway under the gate needed to be raised to prevent anyone accessing the property by rolling under the gate.

Our company sawcut a patch from the existing bitumen driveway then used roadbase to raise the level up, creating a hump with even fall on both sides.

Asphalt (also called bitumen or hotmix) was then laid over the new hump, tying in flush with the existing driveway to create an even new surface.

rear carpark bitumen patch repair - Mt Lawley Perth

rear carpark bitumen patch repair - Mt Lawley Perth

Aug 2016

This rear carpark laneway had an area excavated and was in need of repair. Our workcrew removed excess fill (boxed out) , then lay 100mm of roadbase which was compacted and waterbound forming a hard basecourse, then sealed with a final layer of asphalt (also called bitumen / hotmix). The new surface was tied in flush to the surrounding asphalt carpark and soakwell lid to create a safe working area and will last for many years to come.

Yellow sand has been sprinkled on this job after completion to protect it against unsightly tyre scuff marks.

red bitumen driveway - Bedfordale - Perth Hills

red bitumen driveway - Bedfordale - Perth Hills

Aug 2016

These property owners in Bedfordale engaged our company to refresh their old driveway with a new red asphalt driveway (also called red oxide bitumen, or just red bitumen).

The new asphalt / hotmix surface ties in great with the local orange gravel rock garden bed edging, as well as creating a great looking, safe, low maintenance area which ties in to the existing concrete footpath and limestone retaining wall.

These photos were taken immediately after the job was completed so the red oxide has not yet lightened but will do so in the future, and the driveway will turn a lighter shade of red that many Perth hills residents are familiar with.

Yellow sand has been sprinkled on this job to protect it from initial tyre scuff marks.

Heavy duty soakwells in industrial yard - Bibra Lake - Perth

Heavy duty soakwells in industrial yard - Bibra Lake - Perth

Aug 2016

This industrial yard required several large soakwells to deal with stormwater drainage. Existing roadbase was excavated to allow for installation of the soakwells, then backfilled and compacted around the new soakwells and heavy duty lids.

Resurface red bitumen driveway - Glen Forrest Perth Hills

Resurface red bitumen driveway - Glen Forrest Perth Hills

Aug 2016

This long driveway in Glen Forrest was old and worn before our workcrew arrived to resurface it. The new 25mm layer of red bitumen (also called red gravelpave hotmix / red oxide asphalt) brings it up like new and the surface will last for many more years to come.

Red bitumen when first laid is very dark in colour and lightens over time as the oxide reacts with sunlight, resulting in the light red (almost orange) colour that most customers, especially in the Perth hills areas, would be familiar with.

Some loose yellow sand has been sprinkled on this driveway after completion to protect it against tyre scuff marks within it's first few days (scuff marks are a little unsightly but don't affect the strength or durability of the asphalt).

subdivision crossovers - Mt Helena - Perth hills

subdivision crossovers - Mt Helena - Perth hills

Aug 2016

These Mount Helena property owners are in the process of subdividing their large block, and as part of the Shire / council approval process, each new block must have a sealed crossover leading from the road to the property boundary.

Our company was recommended to them by the Shire of Mundaring contractors list as we have worked in the area for over 30 years.

Each of the four crossovers were boxed out (excess fill removed and disposed of in an approved recycling depot). A hardstand was installed (roadbase / gravel / limestone - in this case gravel - also called ferricrete) which is orange in appearance and often used in Hills areas to blend into the surroundings. Often in the Perth hills areas, the existing surface is gravel hardstand and we are able to use that as a part of the basecourse, adding a top layer of ferricrete gravel onto that, which not only blends in but keeps the cost down.

7mm granite black hotmix / asphalt / bitumen was then laid onto the basecourse on all four crossovers to seal them, allowing each new subdivided block to be sold.

These property owners chose not to install kerbing on the sides of the crossover as budget not aesthetics was their primary concern. Kerbing is not necessary for strength or durability of the asphalt / bitumen / hotmix surface, and added to crossovers and driveways by some owners for aesthetic reasons.

red bitumen crossover - Bickley - Perth hills

red bitumen crossover - Bickley - Perth hills

Aug 2016

Asphalt / bitumen / hotmix is a common driveway material in the Perth hills and these photos show why it is a popular choice as it blends into and compliments the surrounding natural environment.

This crossover is actually red oxide bitumen (also called red gravelpave hotmix, red laterite asphalt, or red 1% oxde - all these are the same product with different names) however because it is newly laid, the colouring has not lightened yet and it appears almost black for it's first several months. The colour continues to lighten over time until it appears a light red, almost orange colour, that most Perth hills residents would be familiar with.

The customer chose to finish off this crossover with flush kerbing, which is not a requirement for strength or durability (unless you are driving over the edge of the hotmix regularly) but is a very nice finish to the crossover. The kerbing used is extruded heavy duty concrete kerbing (no oxide / colouring added - plain concrete) and all our kerbing is the same type and strength as used on the side of the roads, not garden kerbing.

potholes in carpark - Forrestfield - Perth foot hills

Aug 2016

These large potholes were a potential hazard in this medical centre carpark and needed fast repair.

Loose debris is swept out of the potholes and new asphalt / bitumen / hotmix is laid to seal over the damaged area.

Yellow sand has been spread on to these newly repaired pothole patches so they can be driven on immediately and still protected from unsightly scuff marks caused by customers turning their vehicle wheels while stationery.

bitumen trench repair - Bentley - Perth industrial

bitumen trench repair - Bentley - Perth industrial

Aug 2016

Our client required reinstatement of the bitumen / asphalt / hotmix after bollards and other equipment were installed in their carpark and yard area.

The existing asphalt was sawcut to provide a neat finish, then the fill in each patch and trench was compacted. The basecourse (either roadbase / gravel / limestone - in this case roadbase) was installed at 150mm thickness to provide heavy duty specifications.

Heavy duty asphalt / bitumen / hotmix (with 10mm aggregate - hence the coarse appearance of the new surface) was installed to seal the patches and trenches and provide a strong, long lasting surface.

Yellow sand has been sprinkled on this job to protect it from unsightly scuff marks during it's first few days.

Bitumen / asphalt / hotmix patch next to new limestone wall - Mahogany Creek - Perth hills

Bitumen / asphalt / hotmix patch next to new limestone wall - Mahogany Creek - Perth hills

Jul 2016

This Mahogany Creek property owner had some works done to his existing red hotmix driveway and parking area (red oxide asphalt / red oxide asphalt) and asked us to come and patch some small areas, trenches and extend the driveway to create a parking bay.

The above photo shows the patch next to a new limestone wall, with the new red hotmix (red oxide bitumen / red oxide asphalt) sitting flush with the existing, and neatly finishing off the surface next to the limestone wall. This creates a safe, low maintenance area.

Red oxide takes some time to oxidise in the sun, so the new patch in this photo appears darker than the surrounding older asphalt / hotmix / bitumen, but will lighten over time.

Yellow sand is sprinkled on new asphalt / hotmix / bitumen to protect it against unsightly tyre scuff marks in the first few days it is laid (these do not affect the strength or durability of the driveway and are only aesthetic - we also repair them free of charge during our 2 year guarantee period on the off chance they do happen).

completed asphalt driveway - Boya - Perth hills

completed asphalt driveway - Boya - Perth hills

Jul 2016

See previous entry for the before photo showing the old, worn roadbase / gravel hardstand driveway. Ruts can be seen where water run off has created an uneven surface.

While uneven and unsightly, the hardstand (roadbase / gravel / limestone) driveway was a solid foundation for us to build on, so the contaminated top layer of roadbase was scraped away, a fresh new hardstand (roadbase / gravel / limestone - in this case roadbase) was then added to form a new solid basecourse, ready to be sealed with asphalt / bitumen / hotmix. We also used this opportunity to create a camber in the driveway to create fall off the driveway onto the surrounding garden bed (rather than allowing water to flow like a river down the middle of the driveway and out on to the road).

The entire driveway was then sealed with a fresh layer of red gravelpave hotmix (bitumen / asphalt) with 1% oxide (also called red oxide asphalt). The main part of the driveway was very steep but our experienced workcrew had no problems, and we do not charge any extra for steep driveways.

This photo was taken immediately after the job was finished, so the red oxide has not had a chance to oxidise yet, and it will lighten in the future to become the light red / orange colour that many Perth hills residents will be familiar with.

This property owner chose not to install kerbing on the sides of the driveway for two reasons - 1) they prefer the less formal look aesthetically, and 2) water run off was a major issue on this very steep driveway and having no edging allowed the water to run into the surrounding garden beds more easily.

This asphalt / bitumen / hotmix driveway will now last for many more years.

This popular restaurant in Nedlands (Perth western suburbs) had a new grease trap installed behind the building. See previous photo for before which shows the sandy sub-base used to backfill the grease trap. We compacted this sub-base before installing a 100mm thick roadbase/gravel hardstand into the excavated area. 25mm of new granite black asphalt/hotmix/bitumen was then laid and rolled, sealing the area.

This area can be driven on immediately and provides a smooth, durable surface for storage and deliveries for many years to come.

Driveway resurface - Darlington - Perth hills

Jul 2016

This Darlington (Perth hills) driveway and crossover was potholed and in need of repair. We prefilled the potholes with roadbase/gravel then laid red gravelpave hotmix (red oxide bitumen / red oxide asphalt) over the top to create a new driveway surface.

The surface levels were modified to ensure water is diverted to the new precast concrete kerbing then into a drain/soakwell.

Red asphalt is quite dark when first laid, then turns lighter red over time as the oxide reacts with sunlight. This new asphalt/bitumen/hotmix not only looks great but will last for many more years.

verge in red asphalt - Kalamunda - Perth hills

verge in red asphalt - Kalamunda - Perth hills

Jul 2016

These property owners wanted a low maintenance verge so opted to seal the area with red gravelpave hotmix/asphalt/bitumen (also called red oxide hotmix/asphalt/bitumen).

We boxed out the area (removed excess fill/gravel/sand) then installed a 100mm thick roadbase/gravel hardstand basecourse which was compacted and waterbound to form a solid basecourse ready for the hotmix/asphalt/bitumen surface to be laid on.

The final step of installing 25mm of red gravelpave hotmix/asphalt/bitumen (also called red oxide hotmix/asphalt/bitumen or red laterite hotmix/asphalt/bitumen) sealed the area and provided not only a low maintenance verge, but also additional parking areas for family, visitors, trailers or boat storage.

This photo was taken immediately after the job was completed, so you can see the red oxide hotmix/asphalt/bitumen is almost black in colour but will become a lighter red over time.

resurface and extend crossover - Samson - Fremantle area

resurface and extend crossover - Samson - Fremantle area

Jul 2016

This crossover in Samson (Fremantle area) had seen many years of life but was old, worn and in need of a facelift.

The existing surface was still very solid, so we swept it clean of any loose rubble, prefilled a few small potholes/depressions, then resurfaced it with a new fresh 25mm layer of red gravelpave hotmix with 1% oxide (also called red oxide hotmix/asphalt/bitumen or red laterite hotmix/asphalt/bitumen). The owners also took the opportunity to make the crossover slightly larger, allowing for easier access from the road to their concrete driveway and garage.

This photo was taken immediately after the job was completed, so you can see the red oxide hotmix/asphalt/bitumen is still very dark (almost appears black for the first few weeks) - this crossover will lighten to the usual light red colouring over time as the oxide within it reacts with sunlight.

New asphalt driveway - Kalamunda Perth hills

New asphalt driveway - Kalamunda Perth hills

Jun 2016

The property owners driveway was previously gravel hardstand with sandy patches making a dusty and unsealed entrance and parking area.

We scraped the contaminated top layer of gravel off to dispose of, then laid a fresh layer of gravel/roadbase to be compacted and waterbound forming a solid hardstand basis for the asphalt/hotmix/bitumen to be laid on to.

25mm of black asphalt/hotmix/bitumen completed the job and the property owners are very happy with the new area.

You can see in the photo that concrete kerbing was not used on the edges, the owners preferred a less formal look, and much of the sides was butted up against garden edging anyway.

Some property owners choose to have semi-mountable, mountable, barrier or flush concrete kerbing added to the sides of their driveways and crossovers for aesthetic reasons.

Completed loading ramp - Bentley - Perth industrial

Completed loading ramp - Bentley - Perth industrial

Jun 2016

Completed asphalt loading ramp in Bentley (Perth southern industrial suburbs), allowing trucks and forklifts to better access the loading dock.

The area can be used immediately and has been covered with yellow sand to minimise scuff marks (which don't affect the strength of the surface but don't look nice!).

See our previous entry for a photo of the roadbase, supplied and installed at an average of 200mm to create the shape of the ramp. This photo shows the completed asphalt/hotmix/bitumen at an average thickness of 40mm which is heavy-duty and will withstand years of wear from trucks and forklifts.

Your average residential driveway only needs 25mm thickness of asphalt/hotmix/bitumen in contrast, as it is only subjected to normal traffic and will also last for many years.

Roadbase ramp to loading bay – Bentley – Perth industrial

Jun 2016

Roadbase has been supplied and laid to form a ramp up to the loading bay, giving better access for trucks and forklifts. This is done in preparation for the hotmix/asphalt/bitumen surface to be installed at 40mm thickness for heavy truck usage (photos of completed job to follow).

Roadbase and asphalt are an affordable option when extending or repairing industrial yards and can withstand very heavy traffic when installed at the correct specifications.

The clients chose roadbase and asphalt for this job, as their trucks could use the area immediately after our completion, unlike concrete which would require them to close off the area for several days while the concrete cured.

rural driveway Bickley Perth Hills - red bitumen with kerbing

rural driveway Bickley Perth Hills - red bitumen with kerbing

Aug 2015

This rural driveway in Bickley has been finished off nicely with red hotmix (also called laterite hotmix or red gravelpave asphalt). This photo was taken one year after the driveway was laid and some of the red colouring has started to appear, and this will continue to lighten over time.

Semi-mountable kerbing has been laid either side of the driveway which isn't necessary for strength or durability but provides a very nice finish.

Lesmurdie - crossover, headwalls and culvert pipe

Lesmurdie - crossover, headwalls and culvert pipe

Jul 2015

Lesmurdie in the Perth Hills has areas where storm water drains are not part of the street and each property has a drainage trench running along their verge to take care of rain water.

We constructed this crossover including a culvert pipe to allow rain water to run under the crossover, and two stone headwalls (one on each side of the crossover). A roadbase / gravel / limestone hardstand basecourse was then installed over the top of the culvert pipe allowing vehicle access from the road onto the property's driveway.

25mm of black granite hotmix / bitumen / asphalt was then laid on this to seal the area and provide a long lasting, durable surface which will last for many years.

Subdivision driveway Guildford

Subdivision driveway Guildford

Mar 2015

This asphalt/hotmix/bitumen driveway was constructed for clients who were subdividing a large block in Guildford, in Perth’s eastern suburbs.

The site was a sand track to the two rear blocks on our arrival, as plumbing had just been installed down the driveway to supply the two rear blocks. We levelled the sand, then supplied and installed 100mm of roadbase, which was compacted and waterbound to form a solid hardstand basecourse.

It was then sealed with 7mm black coloured asphalt/hotmix/bitumen and it was ready to use immediately after our completion.

Kerbing was not added to this job as it was not required, and this also helped to keep the cost down for our clients. Kerbing is generally added for aesthetic reasons or where vehicles drive over the edge of the asphalt regularly and can be added to any asphalt area at a later stage if needed.

Yellow sand has been sprinkled on the driveway after completion to protect it from initial tyre scuffmarks.

This driveway now meets Shire/Council approval for subdivision requirements and the rear blocks can be sold.

Jan 2014

Photo was taken several years after this job was completed, so the red asphalt has had a chance to lighten in colour over time.

We installed semi-mountable kerbing on this Perth hills driveway before sealing it with red asphalt / red gravelpave hotmix / red bitumen.

Crossover in Maida Vale, Perth foothills

Crossover in Maida Vale, Perth foothills

Aug 2013

A newly installed rural asphalt/hotmix/bitumen crossover without kerbing, joining the property on to the adjacent right of way. This gives the property owner access to the rear of their property in Maida Vale.

Notice the difference in colours from the new and old red gravelpave hotmix/asphalt/bitumen surfaces – the darker surface is the new asphalt/hotmix/bitumen which will oxidise and lighten over time, and the lighter red coloured surface in the foreground is several years older.

The surface was sprinkled with yellow sand to protect it from tyre scuff marks and allow for immediate use.

The property owners chose not to install kerbing, however this can be added at a later date if required.

The advantage of using asphalt/hotmix/bitumen driveway surface instead of concrete is that the sub-base has a high clay content in this Perth hills area, which means concrete has a higher chance of cracking - as the asphalt has bitumen within it, this makes it more flexible.

New driveway and crossover construction- Kalamunda - Perth Hills

New driveway and crossover construction- Kalamunda - Perth Hills

Nov 2011

This asphalt/hotmix/bitumen driveway and crossover was constructed using black granite asphalt which turns dark grey after a period of time, just like your local road.

The owner did not require kerbing on the sides of the driveway, however he was advised kerbing could be added at a later date if he would like.

Yellow sand was spread on this newly installed asphalt/hotmix/bitumen driveway and crossover so traffic can use the surface immediately while still giving the new surface some protection from tyre scuff mark damage.

This driveway gives the property owner access to their rear garage as well as providing several parking areas.

The sealed surface means no more dust, loose gravel or sand! Asphalt will last for many years.
